This year's Stephen Starr-Garry Maddox Barbecue Challenge, presented by Hatfield Quality Meats®, takes place on Saturday, August 7 when restaurant teams and pit master teams converge on Citizens Bank Park to compete for bragging rights to the region's best barbecue. All proceeds from the event benefit the Youth Golf & Academics Program (YGAP), an academic enrichment program founded by Garry Maddox to support children who reside in troubled city neighborhoods. Since its inception, the Barbecue Challenge has raised over $400,000 for Garry's charity.

Admission to the Barbecue Challenge is free, and the event features great food, family-friendly entertainment, and appearances by Phillies alumni and the Phanatic. Sampling tickets will be available, with a donation to charity, in the contest location on August 7 and can be redeemed at participating restaurant stands between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., while supplies last. Garry Maddox founded the Barbecue Challenge in 2001 as a way to raise funds for his children's charity. Maddox is a businessman and former centerfielder for the Philadelphia Phillies. During his distinguished 14-year career in major-league baseball, Mr. Maddox won eight Gold Glove awards and was a member of the World Series-winning Phillies team of 1980. Mr. Maddox is the Principal and CEO of A. Pomerantz & Co. which specializes in corporate office furniture and related services and is also the president of World Wide Concessions, Inc., offering customized advertising and promotions. He is well known for his involvement in civic and charitable organizations.
